October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Pink_ribbon Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States and the second leading cause of female cancer death. The American Cancer Society (ACS) expects 192,370 new cases to be diagnosed this year alone. However, for those cases detected early enough, there’s encouraging news—the disease is highly treatable, with over 2.5 million survivors living in the United States today. That’s why we, at Pür Minerals, urge you to get checked and get active in the fight against this malicious disease.

Check Yourself

While regular self-checking is always encouraged, it’s no substitute for clinical screening, which can detect the disease in its earliest (and most treatable) state. In addition the month’s numerous charity and awareness events, October is also host to National Mammography Day. On the third Friday of the month (October 16 for 2009), many radiologists provide free or discounted mammograms. To find a location near you visit the Associated College of Radiology.

Balancing Lip and Eye Looks

Thursday, October 01, 2009 | COLUMN: Tips & How-Tos

Ever notice how some women look overly made up while others seem naturally accentuated? Creating the perfect look truly is a balancing act. When we look at someone’s face, we tend to focus on one feature at a time (usually the eyes or mouth). Hence, one of the biggest—and most common—makeup faux pas is playing up too many features at one time. Pairing dramatic eyes with loud lipstick makes the face look busy and creates a sense of confusion that’s anything but flattering. Even when glamming it up for an after hour get-together or a night on the town, remember that balance is key.

Rant: Snuggie Makes Fashion Week Debut

Thursday, September 17, 2009 | COLUMNS: Around Town, Uncategorized

Shutterstock_934910 The fashion family tree got another black sheep this week—the Snuggie. Making its New York Fashion Week debut (yes, you read correctly), the couch-warming, blanket-bathrobe combo unveiled its new color and design palette, which includes exotic animal prints, tie-dye and camouflage for a triple threat of tacky. While the basic design remained largely unchanged (why mess with a winner?) the fabric got an upgrade to what the company calls its “luxury microplush”—two words that should never be paired together. Ever. Under any circumstance.

Wearing White After Labor Day

Thursday, September 03, 2009 | COLUMNS: Tips & How-Tos, Uncategorized

While it’s been long said that you shouldn’t wear white after Labor Day, the origin of this fashion faux pas is shrouded in mystery. Originally intended only for dress shoes and pumps, at some point the “rule” was extended to include all white clothing. However, as newer generations of fashionistas continue to push the envelope, many are questioning the shelf life of this once summer-only color. Here’s the scoop on this white-hot topic:
