One-on-One with Celebrity Makeup Artist Samuel Paul

Wednesday, January 21, 2015 | COLUMNS: Behind the Brush, Makeup, Things We Love

We’ve long been a fan of celebrity makeup artist Samuel Paul and the beautiful looks he creates. You can see his work gracing the pages of magazines, in fashion advertisements and at red carpet events – and chances are you have seen them often!

He has worked with Olivia Munn, Nikki Reed, Azealia Banks and many more. We recently had the honor of chatting with Samuel and caught up on topics like what we can find in his kit, beauty trends for 2015, the best makeup tips and much more.

Best makeup advice you’ve ever received?
My favorite makeup advice is to work in layers especially with foundation. I like to start sheer and add more where needed for a natural finish and I wait till almost the end of the whole makeup application before applying powder to give time for the foundation to meld into the skin. Sometimes you might notice that you don’t need to powder your whole face and just keep the powdering to the T-zone.

What’s the most common beauty advice you give?
When you have time constraints for makeup, the three most important things are tinted moisturizer, a lip stain/balm and to curl your eyelashes and a swipe of mascara as it’s a great wakeup for your eyes and really gives a finished quality to your face.

Favorite beauty trends for 2015?
My favorite beauty trends for 2015 are the continued fresh skin, the new bold graphic eyes not only in black but also bright pops of eyeliners in unexpected shades like green, yellow or purple which is super fun and cool.

Favorite beauty trend of the past?
I will always love the 90′s peachy brown nude lip finished with a slightly darker lip liner.

Trends from 2014 you think will continue into the New Year?
Fresh highlighted skin is a trend I don’t see going away anytime soon. I love the dewiness using a liquid or cream highlighter (like Jouer’s Feather Highlighter) and dabbing a bit in the corner of the eyes, down the center of the nose, above the cupids bow and right on top of the of cheeks. It works well with a slight contouring of the cheeks, around the face and softly on the sides of the nose. I like to use the Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Sheer Powders. I also really like the trend of orange based lip colors but with a dab of gloss in the center of the lip to make it more juicy than matte.

In my kit you’ll find…
Some of my current kit staples are Pür Minerals 4-in-1 Disappearing Ink Concealer, Tinted Moisturizer and their Liquid Foundations. I also carry Pür Minerals Color Correcting Primers, Pür Minerals Afterglow Illuminating Powder for highlighting the face and I use an extra-large powder brush to highlight the collar bone, décolletage. I also use it and down the arms and legs after moisturizing the body with Nivea Essentially Enriched Body Lotion for dry skin. It gives an amazing glow.  I carry L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black and Nars Satin Lip Pencils are my go-to for their nice color range. Chubby lip pencils are great for a full finished mouth or dabbed on and blotted for a stained look.

Caroline Sims knows how to handle a beauty emergency. The UK-based makeup wizard has worked on some of the most demanding photo shoots and fashion shows there are, including projects for Vogue and Tatler and behind the scenes for Armani and Marc Jacobs. When faced with an unexpected blemish or discoloration, she reaches for Disappearing Act™ 4-in-1 Concealer. Here’s why she loves it and how she uses it on and off the set:

“[Disappearing Act is] a fantastic correcting and camouflaging concealer for covering dark circles and imperfections. It’s not just a cover-up, as it purifies the skin while you wear it. Apply to the skin with a synthetic brush and then pat with your finger to soften edges for a flawless result.”

On Camera with the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders

Thursday, June 13, 2013 | COLUMN: Behind the Brush

by guest blogger Tamra Compton

At the 2014 Atlanta Falcons Cheerleader calendar shoot, Pür pulled out all the stops to make the girls camera-ready! We used 4-in-1 Pressed Mineral Makeup to erase imperfections and Balancing Act to banish shine but still leave the girls looking fresh-faced. Our Lip Gloss Sticks were perfect for last-minute touchups because they provided just the right amount of sheer color and shine in one convenient jumbo pencil. Of course no swimsuit shoot would be complete without our famous Mineral Glow bronzer and waterproof Eye Defining Pencils. We had to keep those girls looking hot—not melted!
