Happy Fat Tuesday, everybody! Mardi Gras is legendary for its exciting parties, grand balls, marvelous masquerades and colorful, action-packed parades. In New Orleans and other cities in the Southeast, locals and tourists use beads, doubloons, extravagant costumes and delicious King Cake to party down. I’ve always wanted to participate in the Mardi Gras merriment, but for now, I’ll celebrate by highlighting the traditional colors of the festivities: Purple, Green and Gold! Each color has its own significance and symbolism, and these flirty, fun shades will have you saying “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” (Let the good times roll!)

Last night, Hollywood dazzled us yet again at the 83rd Academy Awards. And while the ceremony itself was as glamorous as any in recent history, the red carpet lead-up left us longing for more. This year, more stars chose to play it safe than to take wild wardrobe chances, much to our chagrin. Even the notoriously style impaired (i.e. Helen Bonham Carter) looked relatively tame by past award show standards. To be sure, the star-studded event did offer a few gems, but for those of us hoping for a runaway hit look or a fashion disaster, the view was pretty bleak.

In case you didn’t remember, yesterday was Groundhog Day. In Georgia, both of our furry foreseers, Gus and General Beauregard Lee, predicted an early spring, and I’m putting faith in them. Thanksgiving is rapidly approaching. Dreams of my mom’s homemade dressing (that’s stuffing in a pan, y’all) and whatever gourmet goodies my brother-in-law/professional chef decides to make are already swirling in my head and making my mouth water. As much as we all love these Turkey Day treats, they cause internal struggles within us. To gorge, or not to gorge? That is the question that tugs at our heart strings and our waist lines. Well, I am a non believer in trying to give Thanksgiving a complete health makeover, since I generally try to maintain good eating habits to be heart healthy and in tip-top shape, but I always believe in cutting corners and trimming the fat.
