Ah…summer vacation. Let the kids play at the pool while you find a shady spot with a great book. On the prowl for the perfect read? Here are a few of my recent favorites.
Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter
This story takes place in modern day Hollywood and a small Italian village in the 60s and, somehow, intersects in the best way possible. It’s so great it’s already been optioned for a film. Once you read it, you’ll totally understand why—it’s gorgeous, romantic, sad and funny.
Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
This book about a woman who goes missing has been on the bestseller list for years—and with good reason. Once you start reading it, you can’t stop. You will be trying to figure out how and why she’s gone and if her husband a suspect; the ending will have you discussing it with friends for hours. This has also been optioned for a movie with Reese Witherspoon.
Where We Belong by Emily Giffin
This is a beautiful story about a woman who gave up her baby, only to be reunited 18 years later. You see the point of view from both women. It’s a beautiful story from a writer who’s given us so many great beach reads, like Something Borrowed and Baby Proof. All great.
Most Talkative by Andy Cohen
If you have any fascination with pop culture, get this book immediately. Andy has been a fly on the wall with celebrities, news events and—of course—Real Housewives. You will feel like you’re best friends with him in the end.
Bossypants by Tina Fey
Warning to anyone sitting near you—you’ll be laughing aloud over and over again. Tina is spot on and is a brilliant voice for real women. If you love comediennes like Tina, try Kathy Griffin’s and Sarah Silverman’s books as well. Both hysterical and surprisingly touching.
Where Did You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple
A friend recommended this novel about a career mom who is on the brink of a meltdown. How many of us can relate to that? Will report back on how I like it.
