Songs for the Open Road

Can you believe it? Memorial Day weekend is already here! As we prepare for summer, here are a few songs that’ll be perfect for your next road trip.

“Taking The Long Way” by the Dixie Chicks

Forget the politics, the song and entire album is incredible.

“These Roads Don’t Move” by Jay Ferrar & Ben Gibbard

What happens when you mix Sun Volt and Death Cab For Cutie? Perfect driving music.

“Thunder Road” by Bruce Springsteen

The Boss of all driving songs.

“Car Wheels On A Gravel Road” by Lucinda Williams

If you love Sheryl Crow, you’ll love Lucinda. She’s grittier and rougher around the edges.

“Big Weekend” by Tom Petty

You could go with one of the classics, but this song is so much more fun.

“Freeway” by Aimee Mann

This song is mostly about the LA suburbs, but it’s still great for wherever you’re going.

“Silvertown Blues” by Mark Knopfler

This is about a rock star traveling all over America with sunglasses on. Wayfarers not included, but I’d get some anyway. It’s summer!

“Holiday” by Vampire Weekend

They have a more current album out—but I have a soft spot for Contra. You might’ve heard it on a commercial, but don’t let that ruin this perfect tune.

“Willin” by Little Feat

A classic tale of a sad, troubled truck driver.

“Graceland” by Paul Simon

It’s a perfect traveling song. And it’s Paul Simon. Enough said.

“Green Onions” by Booker T. & the MGs

This has nothing to do with driving, but you will feel ultra-cool driving to it. Use your Wayfarers here too.

“Highway 61 Revisited” by Bob Dylan

Dylan is the ultimate road dog. Even after all these years, his songs are still timeless.

“Get Out The Map” by the Indigo Girls

Until someone writes a song about GPS, this one will do. Even if you’re staying home, this will make you want to go somewhere.
