by guest blogger Mara Davis
I’ve often said the best Mother’s Day gift is a day of just being left alone. Take the kids somewhere and let her breathe; most moms just want a break! Since everyone may not agree on this, here are a few ideas that she’ll love—or at least not exchange.
Flowers Done Right
Flowers are nice, but PLEASE get them from a local florist. With the help of Google, finding a reputable shop is easy. Supermarket bunches are usually sad and saggy. And the 1-800-whatever bouquets never look like the picture.
Gifts That Pamper
Manicure and pedicures are predictable but great. This is why I suggest adding some funky nail polish to it. The colors from Butter London are so fun. Get a set and put the gift card with it.
Help Her Relax
I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love a beautiful throw blanket. Add a TV season on DVD, and she’ll be in heaven: cashmere, wool or cotton (as long as it’s soft) with Scandal, Mad Men, Downton Abbey, Girls or Homeland make excellent gifts!
Le Creuset items are always a hit. If the mom you’re buying for loves to cook, you cannot go wrong with these. They last forever and can be found deeply discounted at places like Homegoods, Marshalls or TJ Maxx.
Hit the Books
Coffee table books are great gifts because it’s the kind of thing you rarely buy for yourself. What’s mom into? Find a book on that. I got my mom this book on dogs because she loves them.
Lift Her Spirits
Most moms love some unwinding every now and then (all the time?), so I suggest a good bottle of liquor. Whether it’s scotch, vodka, tequila, champagne or wine, she’ll be happy to indulge. Bonus: she’ll probably share with you.
Read All About It
Magazine subscriptions like People, Us Weekly, New Yorker, In Style and Rachel Ray are the gifts that keep on giving. You can’t go wrong with them.
Make It Personal
Any of these ideas with a hand written card from you and the kids will make it a great with mom. Good luck and happy shopping!
