Cover Up
If you know you’re going to be outside for a long time, cover your head. Straw hats and scarves are both stylish and sensible, helping to shield hair from dehydrating, damaging UV rays. If you’re not a fan of hats, you should definitely apply a moisturizing, leave-in conditioner or hair sunscreen, such as Aveda Color Conserve Sun Protector, before you head outdoors.

Play it Cool
Washing your hair in too-hot water can suck the moisture out of your hair and scalp, causing split ends and breakage. Rinsing your hair with warm water to open hair cuticles and allow the vitamins and nutrients from your shampoo to soak in. Then rinse with cool water to close your hair cuticles. This will lock in moisture and keep hair shiny, strong and flyaway-free.

Also, avoid using too many hot styling tools, such as blow dryers, flat irons and curling irons. To limit hair damage, cut back usage to a few days a week and apply a leave-in conditioner before turning on the heat.

Give it a Rest
To help repair damage, it’s a good idea to give your hair a “break” one day a week. Choose a day when you don’t plan on going anywhere and don’t wash or style your hair at all. Using the pads of your fingers—not your nails—give yourself a relaxing head massage to increase circulation and stimulate hair follicles. Then, apply a hydrating balm like Pür Balm to tips and work though to mend splits. Loaded with nourishing shea butter, vitamin E and essential oils, this quick fix balm provides the pür-fect dose of hair-taming hydration.
